While the popularity of X (formerly known as Twitter) may be declining, it still retains the capacity to significantly influence public discourse. The platform allows individuals to reach a vast audience, showcasing the potential for a single person to have a substantial impact.
For example, Jarrod Fidden, an Australian entrepreneur residing in Ireland, is believed to be behind the Wide Awake Media account on X. This account has gained significant traction, particularly among climate change skeptics.
Its followers include prominent figures like former government officials and academics. The account's rapid growth and influence have raised concerns among experts who study the spread of misinformation. An article goes on to say:
“The fact that a single conspiracy entrepreneur has been able to gain such a large foothold in Twitter’s information ecosystem is concerning to experts who research climate denialism and its dissemination.” The Wide Awake Media account is ‘verified’ on Twitter “meaning its operator pays for a subscription, and in return has its visibility and replies boosted by the site’s algorithm. A verified account also means Wide Awake Media can make money from popular content.”
Wide Awake Media is one of what Jennie King, director of climate research and policy for the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a UK-based think tank that studies how extremism and disinformation spread online, estimates are less than about 50 such accounts “in the Anglosphere, who are really driving this ecosystem. They are constantly citing each other, appearing in each other’s channels, using each other to provide a veneer of credibility, and doing what disinfo needs to in order to survive: create the impression of critical mass.”
It is discouraging to see how a small number of accounts can have such an outsized impact and highlights the potential for misinformation to spread rapidly and influence public opinion.
