The Guardian of Jamaica Bay

Jamaica Bay is found at the southwestern part of Long Island and is located within the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens.

In its 16,000 acres of surface waters and 3,000 acres of islands and marshes it serves as an essential home for populations of flora and fauna.

Tide and Time is a short film that introduces us to 85 year old resident Don Riepe who is one of New York City’s recognizable conversationists. Nicknamed the ‘Guardian of Jamaica Bay’, Riepe has played an important role in restoring the marshes, which have decreased by 75% in the last 125 years because of sea level rise and human actions.

Riepe wants to share his knowledge and passion with the next stewards as he comments in the film “You’ll only protect what you love” and Riepe has loved nature since he was a child.

Watch the film and get inspired.
