Sustainable, beautiful and record breaking

Back in May 2025 a building in Edmonton, Canada was presented with a Guiness World Record for the world’s largest solar panel mural. The mural is on the side of The SunRise building and was created by Indigenous artist Lance Cardinal. Canadian company Mitrex manufactured the solar façade which encompasses the entire building and delivers 54% of the energy needs.

The record-breaking solar panel mural came to life when the building owner approached Cardinal to help create a design that was relevant to the community. Cardinal's vision was "to pull together the First Nations Cree totem, seven sacred animals in the Cree totem, and the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac and do something up the whole side of the building."

Max Daniel Graham from Avenue Living said “The world record that we accomplished today is just a wonderful add-on. But it was really about making this community, this building, part of the community and as (Cardinal) mentioned, a place that our neighbors feel seen.”

What a wonderful accomplishment!
