Keeping your medications safe in the heat

Depending on where you live and whether or not you have a home with air conditioning you may be struggling with sleeping at night, cooking meals or even doing simple household chores. But you might be unaware that excess heat “can also create health risks we don’t always think about. High temperatures can damage some medications, making them less effective when you need them.” In addition, hotter temperatures in your surrounding environment “can also affect how your body responds to certain medicines, increasing your risk of dehydration or heat-related illness.”

Here are some simple tips to store medications safely and stay well during heat waves - we’ve just provided the basics - go the article for full details:

  1. Store medications somewhere cool and dry
  2. Even if it is convenient, never leave medications in a hot car
  3. Know the signs of heat damage to your medication
  4. For medications that need to be refrigerated, make a plan for power outages
  5. Know how your medications affect you in the heat (ask your doctor or pharmacist if you’re not sure)
