Do you like to travel?
Depending on where you visit, you might be charged a fee that relates to the country’s effort to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Hawaii, which saw a catastrophic wildfire in Lahaina Maui last August, is considering implementing a $25 climate fee for tourists. The money collected would be used to install measures to protect against future wildfires, as well as safeguard the beaches. There were over 9.5 million visitors visitors to the state last year. By comparison the state has close to 1.5 million residents.
If passed, Hawaii would follow Greece and New Zealand which collects fees from tourists for climate impact programs.
As climate change continues to have increasingly strong impacts, will more countries follow suit?
