Systemic change is needed for the world to meet the challenges created by climate change.
One company actively addressing their own responsibility in combating climate change is the Swiss Internet hosting company Infomaniak.
(Full disclosure: Infomaniak is providing free email hosting for The Carbon Almanac Network. But they don’t know we’re writing this text and we won’t show it to them before it’s published.)
On their “Ecology” page, the headline is “We pollute”. That’s a bold first step towards understanding their responsibility to the planet.
But here’s an interesting fact: they analyzed their own environmental impact and realized that 78% of their CO2 emissions came from the manufacturing of new servers. They are now planning for a longer lifespan for new servers, thus cutting down on the need for replacements.
So when companies talk about buying green electricity to reduce their operational emissions, that’s great, but it’s only a small part of the equation.
