Solar panels now mandatory in Tokyo

Tokyo has made a big step towards reducing their carbon emissions. In December 2022, a new regulation was passed that requires solar power panels be installed on new residential properties built by large-scale builders.

This legislation is a first for a Japanese municipality. Houses that are built by a corporate builder and have a square footage up to 21,500 will be impacted.

The world's 5th largest emitter of carbon is hopeful this change will help it met its goal of being carbon neutral in 27 years.

What policy discussions happening in your municipality to help reduce carbon emissions? If none, could you reach out to your local representative to start one?
