The largest ecosystem on the planet is found in the ocean, containing 94% of Earth’s wildlife.
That wildlife can become entangled in plastic waste that is floating in the ocean. And that plastic waste, some of which is known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), can help invasive species move around, further impacting this ecosystem.
The non-profit organization, The Ocean Cleanup, is working to eliminate the GPGP by removing tonnes of plastic from it everyday.
Their System 002 recently removed 55 tonnes of plastic and they just launched the next version, System 003, that aims to be even more efficient at removing plastic waste, while reducing the chance of harm to the wildlife.
Removing the plastic is a needed step, but wouldn’t it be even better if we reduced our use of plastic so that it had less chance of ending up in the waters?
