Reducing food waste through food rescue

Project Drawdown, a non-profit organization, suggests that if global food waste is reduced by 50% by 2050, the amount of carbon dioxide that would not be emitted is the “equivalent to taking 2,570 coal-fired power plants offline”.

OzHarvest is an Australian non-profit organization focused on reducing food waste through food rescue, education and innovative ideas.

In 2022 alone, they rescued close to 11,500,000 kilograms/25,300,000 pounds of food.

If you have some food in your refrigerator that needs rescuing, you may find their recipe section on their website particularly helpful to avoid the food ending up in the garbage.

Perhaps there is a similar organization operating in your neighborhood that could use your help. Or perhaps you are the leader who will start one.

Tomorrow we focus on advocating for composting in restaurants.
