We make so many things out of plastic, so why not roads?
MacRebur, a UK based company, has developed and tested 3 waste plastic additives that can be added to roads. By adding non-recyclable waste plastics to roads, it extends the life of the road, reduces fossil fuel usage and helps reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. It also helps reduce the cost of making roads as MacRebur products are cheaper than some of the other materials used in roads.
A single ton of the mix that MacRebur produces contains the equivalent of 80 000 plastic water bottles. The equivalent weight of 2.8 million single-use plastic bags is removed from the environment for every mile of road paved. Not only that, these roads can be recycled at the end of their lives.
MacRebur has paved thousands of miles of road in the UK as well as other places in the world such as Australia.
Hopefully this style of road will become available in more places so even more plastic is saved from entering our landfills and oceans.
