What began in Germany last year has made its way across to North America.
The first hydrogen powered train in North America is starting a two month trial in Canada. Hydrogen powered trains emit only water vapor making them free of the carbon emissions that are a product of the traditional diesel trains.
For the 2.5 hour ride, this train is replacing 500 litres of diesel fuel with 50 kilograms of hydrogen.
There are some challenges to work out before hydrogen powered trains replace diesel trains, but this is a good first step to helping train transportation become more environmentally friendly.
