Drought conditions, exacerbated by climate change, that make agriculture less profitable or productive in rich countries like Canada or the United States cause farmers economic hardship but in low and middle income countries, like India, rural farmers have much less land and their daily earnings are less than $3.
Kheyti an Indian company that won the Earthshot Prize in 2022, has developed technology for greenhouses that smallholder farmers can access. The company’s Greenhouse-in-a-Box is a tool to aid farmers survive drought conditions through a reduction in water demands (upwards of 90% less water). Other benefits include a reduction in pesticides usage and soil erosion.
It is heartening to see this initiative that aims to help those who are being most severely affected by climate change but who have contributed so little to the production of greenhouse gas emissions that are causing it.
