It’s nothing unusual for city’s, particularly progressive and highly-populated ones such as San Francisco, to have extensive climate plans. But as writer Michael Shank says in an article “a plan alone doesn’t move the needle on decarbonization nor does it inherently motivate the city’s stakeholders—both public and private—to act on that plan.”
Plans are often long, complicated and full of jargon. That could certainly be said of San Francisco’s plan which is “300 pages and not very digestible for the vast majority of residents”.
Luckily, the San Francisco (SF) Environment Department has experience in crafting campaigns that can turn dry, complex policy documents into fun, inspirational and motivating ads. Their videos for the climate plan are short (less than a minute each), peppy and directly tell you what the plan aims to do, why it matters and what personal action you can do in support of it. They are also available in Cantonese and Spanish as well as English. See all 28 of them on YouTube.
Does your city have a climate plan? If you aren’t sure it could be because little effort has been made in publicizing the plan in a smart way.
