Collective action is like an algebraic equation. The numbers and the impact get bigger and bigger, faster and faster.
That’s the idea behind the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. This global initiative is asking individuals, governments, organizations, and corporations to endorse the phasing out of fossil fuels and a just transition to other energy sources.
The initiative is modeled on global actions taken decades ago that resulted in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. As described on the website, this “new treaty to address fossil fuels” is based on these three pillars:
- Non-Proliferation - An immediate end to expansion of new coal, oil and gas production.
- Phase Out - Wind down existing production in line with the Paris Agreement target of 1.5ºC.
- A Just Transition - Global support to ensure no worker, community or country is left behind.
The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty website provides more information about each of those pillars, plus plenty of background information. It lists current endorsers and makes it easy to add your name.
The supplementary resource Campaign Hub is more action oriented. It gives you strategies and information for encouraging your organization, employer, or city government to consider endorsing the treaty as well.
