Citizen-led climate policy

In 2019, a group of people from El Paso, Texas who care deeply about the future of their city “formed Sunrise El Paso to stop the sale of our public utility to big banks from out of town. Sunrise El Paso is now collaborating with allies from Ground Game Texas and Sunrise National to continue our work with the Climate Charter.”

This motivated group, which is made up of diverse members from the community, managed to get the Climate Charter on the ballot by surpassing “the necessary 20,000 signatures and gathered 40,000 valid signatures from registered voters who believe in this policy and wanted the opportunity to vote for it”.

‘This policy’ is a Climate Charter for the city of El Paso. The movement’s website lets you easily join in the effort to vote yes on this policy (May 6, 2023) by volunteering to phone bank, take a voter’s pledge, help with canvassing or many other activities.

One of the goals of the movement is to “lead other Texas cities by showing them what is possible”.

What can you learn from this energized and organized group that you can implement in your community?
