Beyond Net Zero Food Production

In 2021, food production contributed 30% of total global carbon emissions.

But, what if food production could be designed so that those emissions were turned into usable, clean energy?

Architecture students in Barcelona are turning this “what if” into a reality. They have designed a solar powered greenhouse that produces 50% more energy that it uses.

Greenhouses are very energy intensive because their temperature must be kept within a specific range for plants to grow. This requires large heating and cooling systems. The solar powered greenhouses are able to generate enough power to meet all of their own energy needs and supply electricity to neighbouring facilities.

At this point the greenhouses are still in the prototype stage, but the design is already being used to create rooftop greenhouses in Barcelona.
